Dive Brief:

• Grubhub is expanding its relationship with campus payments partner Transact Campus by adding restaurants in Grubhub’s marketplace to the Transact Mobile Ordering app, according to a press release issued Monday.
• The partnership “enables students at campuses where Transact’s mobile app is enabled to order from on- and off-campus restaurants via Grubhub’s restaurant network using their campus card,” per the press release.
• Grubhub and Transact said the payment channel would be available to students “in the coming months.”

Dive Insight:

Grubhub, which has been struggling to expand U.S, marketshare in recent years, is plotting growth via campus delivery and ordering solutions, including partnerships with several delivery robot firms. Grubhub and Transact previous partnered in 2021 to enable students using Transact’s campus cash cards to order from Grubhub partner firms who are approved off-campus merchants. Grubhub and Transact said that previous deal applied to hundreds of thousands of students.

Students can switch between on- and off-campus options in the Transact Mobile Ordering app, according to the press release.

“When students select the off-campus option, they will see available Grubhub restaurants for pickup or delivery and pay for meals using their campus card,” the companies said. “Students will be able to access Grubhub’s entire network of more than 365,000 restaurants nationwide and place orders no matter where they are.”

This may make it easier for students to order through Transact’s app while enabling Grubhub to capture orders without having to negotiate partnerships with individual universities, given the size of Transact’s partner network. Transact claims to work with more than 1,850 educational institutions with more than 12 million students, but it’s unclear how many of those students can use its mobile ordering app.
